EXAMPLE:
A Lab puppy born June 11 should go home July 29. *Adjust for February 29
in leap year. Lab puppies should go
to their new home on or about the 49th day.
If puppies go home early, they do not have the time with the litter to be
properly socialized with the other puppies.
That can lead to aggressive behavior or shyness.
At 49 days, puppies are ready to bond with the new owner.
People should become puppies’ best friends, not other dogs.
For practical purposes, puppies usually go home on the Saturday nearest
the 49th day. If possible, the puppy should go home on the new
owner/trainer’s lap. If that is
not possible, have the puppy in a box or crate with an unwashed sweatshirt or
bath towel that contains the scent of the new owner/trainer.
